Director of HR

Vancouver Studio

When we established Phoenix Labs in 2014, our vision was to create a place where diverse teams of people could come together to build deep multiplayer games. We've assembled an experienced, passionate team of 100+ developers in Vancouver, BC and San Mateo, CA.

Our first game, Dauntless, launched in 2019, and was the first game ever to release with true crossplay and cross-progression. Since then, we've watched our community grow to 20+ million players across four platforms. We're also backed by Garena, our long-time partner and one of the largest forces for gaming in Southeast Asia and emerging markets.

As we scale, grow our team, and open offices across North America, evolving our culture and way of operating has become increasingly important. With that, we need a strong leader on our People team to partner with the leadership of our Vancouver studio and challenge them as they work to drive growth and development efforts.

We’re looking for an experienced Director of HR to join the leadership team of our studio in Vancouver and support our development teams. The focus of the HR role is to assess, coach, and influence leaders as we scale and evolve to enable these teams to accomplish amazing things. The Director will be a key partner to the leadership team for our Vancouver studio, and will remain closely connected with leaders across the team, as well as their HR counterparts in our other studios.

At Phoenix Labs, our culture shapes the way we operate as individuals and teams. We need someone who is just as passionate about the culture as they are about the work they are doing in the business. HR leaders at Phoenix Labs are less focused on HR best practices for HR’s sake, and rather are expected to provide wise counsel and partnership to influence business outcomes.

A successful HR Director at Phoenix Labs understands team dynamics, the functions they support, and how they fit in with the broader business. They are comfortable contributing to conversations outside of people and culture, and leveraging our culture to make the business more effective. They are naturally curious and strive to create a supportive and inclusive work environment. Experience in video games or a related field in tech or entertainment is a beneficial foundation for success in this role.

This role requires comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to make quick, well-informed decisions. The HR Director will embody our cultural values through their behaviour and interactions daily. They will help shape and evolve our mosaic culture as we grow and learn as an organization.

Required:

  • 5+ years experience in HR roles, preferably within the video games, entertainment, or software industries.
  • Persuasive, diplomatic, and generally strong communicator; capable of dealing with a wide variety of internal and external partners at all levels of seniority.
  • Strategic thinker but also able to operate on a tactical level to manage the day to day HR operations, must be comfortable with all degrees of ownership.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to deal effectively with multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment and has willingness to operate with flexibility.
  • Excellent judgment and discretion with high sense of integrity. Strong understanding and respect for confidentiality
  • Ability to navigate conflict and complex interpersonal situations impartially but with sensitivity.
  • Deep understanding of BC labour laws. Ability to research and learn quickly for other jurisdictions.
  • Strong skills in MS Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and/or Google Apps (Docs/Sheets) and Gmail.
  • Love of video games and geek culture.
