Combat Animator (Senior, Principal, or Lead)

Phoenix Labs is looking to hire a Senior, Principal, or Lead Combat Animator to join one of our growing game teams! The ideal Animator has a deep passion for stylized, hand keyed animation as well as combat animation. As the first Animator on this project, this person will help define the animation style and develop core animation content for a new unannounced original IP title.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Art Director and Design Director to define the animation tone and style for a new original title.
  • Create and implement immersive third-person, hand-keyed animations with a strong focus on melee and close-range action combat.
  • Support early gameplay prototyping by establishing key frames and blockout animations
  • Craft cohesive, polished animations that deliver a strong experiential value to players.
  • Collaborate with directors to define a high quality bar for animation that balances visual fidelity with gameplay while taking into account technical constraints.
  • Contribute in establishing and maintaining the foundational animation systems in Unreal Engine 5.

Requirements:

  • Multiple years of experience in video game development, with some experience working on combat animations
  • Ability to quickly blockout animations for prototyping as well as carry animations through to a final high-quality polish.
  • Ability to hand-key character and creature animations without a reliance on mocap data.
  • Expert working knowledge of Maya or equivalent animation software.
  • Excellent cross-discipline communication and collaboration skills in a highly creative environment.
  • Experience in developing animations across a variety of platforms with differing technical constraints. 
  • Familiarity with Unreal is a bonus but not required.
  • An animation reel or portfolio demonstrating realtime 3D combat animations.

This is a full-time, permanent position and ideally someone who lives within commuting distance to one of Phoenix Labs locations: Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Vancouver, or Montreal. We will support relocation if needed, but also open to remote work from Canada or the US.
