Lead Game Designer

Design Vancouver, BC

Phoenix Labs is looking for a Lead Game Designer to join one of our new game initiatives in our Vancouver studio. 

Contributing to  a new multiplayer IP, they will work closely with the Design Director  to lead and champion quality design throughout the product. They will use their deep, rich understanding of games and game design principles to drive decisions while educating and elevating the team's solutions. They will inspire and mentor the design team to create memorable player experiences while helping cross-discipline teams with thoughtful solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Working closely with the Design Director  to own and drive large portions of the game ensuring quality design throughout the product.
  • Inspire other designers to a high standard around the craft and tools of design, ensuring the whole team is operating to a high quality standard.
  • Manage and mentor a team of designers to help them thrive and grow.
  • Collaborate with the design team and lead by example while pitching, designing, prototyping and implementing game features.
  • Remain current on game industry trends including new games and game genres, emerging game design methods and techniques.

Required:

  • Shipped or worked on multiple AAA games with extensive experience in professional game design.
  • Deep experience and proficiency in designing / leading implementation of game design features so that they form an engaging and cohesive player experience.
  • A track record of using iterative development to build and ship large-scale design features to millions of players.
  • Experience building and managing a team of designers cohesive player experience.
  • Experience leading and mentoring design teams in shipping multiple titles or large multi-feature updates for live games through strong articulation of a strategy and quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for video games, with a relentless thirst for learning from playing them.

Preferred:

  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Proficiency at scripting and prototyping.
  • Experience working on / playing multiplayer competitive games.
  • Experience working on a live product.
